Surprise! It’s made from animals.
- PLASTIC BAGS — Some contain animal fat to reduce friction.
Alternative — Go green with reusable bags
- BIKE AND CAR TIRES — Some use animal-based stearic acid.
Alternative — Michelin and Kenda, at least, do not.
- FABRIC SOFTENERS — Some, like Downey, use dihydrogenated tallow dimethyl ammonium chloride from animals.
Alternative — See natural fabric softeners.
- SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER — Be sure yours are really cruelty free by looking for vegan brands.
Alternative — PETA keeps a list of cruelty free companies as does Vegan Beauty Review.
- TOOTHPASTE — Many have animal-derived glycerin (as opposed to plant-based, but you can’t tell by looking at the label), and may have been tested on animals.
Alternative — search for Vegan toothpaste online, or use baking soda with peroxide and salt. Don’t worry about flouride as it’s in the water and many foods.
- SUGAR — Ugh! I was stunned when I first heard white cane sugar is filtered through bones.
Alternative — Now I use brown sugar (check the label and make sure it’s not brown sugar made by adding coloring to cane sugar), or unrefined sugars like turbinado. When I want it to be fine in texture, I just spin it in a food processor for a few seconds.
